The week ahead: Athens Popfest (and the Cubs!)

From Cable and Tweed, Posted August, 11th 2008

Busy week ahead as my Chicago Cubs are in Atlanta from Tuesday through Thursday, while Athens Popfest runs from Tuesday until Saturday. I'll be at Turner Field on Tuesday and running around Popfest the rest of the week. If all goes as planned I'll upload pictures as the week/end progresses, though I'm sure they won't measure up to Mike's output.I'll be running around with PJ from The Yellow Stereo, so expect coverage on both ends. I'm sure...

The Dears are Dead; Long Live the Dears

From Sound Bites, Posted August, 11th 2008

The good news: Montreal's The Dears are back with a new album, Missles, due in October on Dangerbird in the US and Maple Music in Canada. The bad news: the band as we've known them for the last five years......

Souled Out!!!-Conor Oberst

From Oceans Never Listen, Posted August, 11th 2008

Here is the brand new video from the brand new Conor Oberst album. I bought the album last week and have been giving it a good listen in that time. My opinion, it's a good, solid album. A couple of great songs, a few very good ones and a couple of average tracks. Maybe Conor won't ever scale the heights of his early Bright Eyes days, but he is at least maturing into a songwriter of considerable strength. Although he...

Monday Music Roundup

From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted August, 11th 2008

On Friday night I had the special experience of watching Prince thrust maniacally on the (very) large screen out under heavy-laden rainy skies at Red Rocks. As part of their wonderfully conceived summer Film On The Rocks series, myself and hundreds of other vocally enthusiastic moviegoers got to bask in the glow of the tiny one's sweaty brow, glistening chest hair, ruffled poet shirts, blindfolds, fancy studded purple jackets and wispy moustache in none other than (yes) Purple Rain. From...

Joe Cocker @ Nokia Theatre 08.06.08

From Speed of Dark, Posted August, 11th 2008

My husband and I went to our first concert together, EVER, to see Joe Cocker on a double bill with The Steve Miller Band. I've been to a lot of concerts, mostly with Alt-gramma, but with friends and even by myself, but strangely enough, not with my husband (hereafter to be referred to as Spouse). While our music tastes overlap somewhat, Spouse doesn't see the need to see someone perform their music live when he can easily whip...

What to Buy : August 12, 2008

From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted August, 11th 2008

New releases are pretty slim this week for some reason, but luckily for you we slacked off last week due to hosting issues, giving us a few picks from last week and an incredibly awesome re-issue to recommend for your consumption this week. Let's do it to it.1.) M. Ward - Transfiguration of Vincent (Deluxe Vinyl Re-issue - Jealous Butcher)[mp3] M. Ward - Vincent O'brien (Non-album Demo)--Portland's wonderful Jealous Butcher is offering, for the first time on vinyl, Matt Ward's...

Isaac Hayes RIP

From The Daily Growl, Posted August, 11th 2008

I almost burnt my leg with the iron when I heard this news on the radio this morning. Tributes have poured in. Obituaries have been published. I'm not sure what I can add to the weight of these apart from to say RIP and point you to some footage of the legend that was, and still is, Isaac Hayes.mp3: Isaac Hayes - Soulsville...

"Oh Noooo... Tivo pieces!"

From Headphones On, Posted August, 11th 2008

Act One of this week's This American Life is so hysterical it had me laughing out loud on the bus to the dismay of the other Monday morning commuters. Mike Birbiglia's story is priceless. Download!......

Life in Low Motion and other concerns...

From Yer Mam!, Posted August, 11th 2008

It's been a while, but now I'm back to post about some stuff I've been meaning to post about in, like, ages or something...One of my personal favourite albums of the year so far and one which has been getting even more repeat spins as of late (put it down to the inclement summer we've been having) is Low Motion Disco's Keep It Slow. Released on the always-excellent Eskimo a couple of months ago (vinyl version comes with a CD...

Jaguar Love: Take Me to the Sea

From Covert Curiosity, Posted August, 11th 2008

Jaguar Love....is a hard thing to describe. It's fiery...energetic...urgent...theatrical...fast...and constantly changing. This wild concoction is made possible by vocalist/pianist Johnny Whitney and guitarist/bassist Cody Votolato from the Blood Brothers, and keyboardist/bassist/drummer Jay Clark from Pretty Girls Make Graves. Drawing from their preivous projects, the group has fallen together somewhat seemlessly. After recording a few songs in 2007 the group signed to Matador Records in January of 2008.Jaguar Love's debut full-length release, Take Me to the Sea, is full of unexplainably hypnotizing tracks....

Afghan Whigs Rarities muxtape + stuff

From Jamies Runout Groove, Posted August, 11th 2008

Hi all,Long time no speak. As you might have guessed from my lengthy lengthy absence, i've got far less time to devote to blogging nowadays. I'm working full time in the music 'biz' for totally amazing promoters All Tomorrow's Parties, and so what with spending most of my day doing music stuff in front of the PC it's hard to devote time to this place. However i'll still be on every now and then to stick some stuff up. Tonight i've...

Kylie Minogue rights every wrong perpetrated by the marketing behind "X"

From DISCONAP, Posted August, 11th 2008

In a perfect world, one devoid of war, crime, and misery, Kylie Minogue would have released the Freemasons edit of her new single "The One" instead of "2 Hearts" as the leasd single off of "X" and would have destroyed everyone else in her path. Unfortunately, the world is super fucked up and she's only getting to it now. Better late than never we suppose. Well done, Kylie/the people that market her. That said, we could do without the Euro-dance vocal...
