Summer Fridays #2: Thursday Edition
From Sound Bites, Posted July, 3rd 2008
As tomorrow is a holiday here in the U.S. (Independence Day), seemed only right that this week's Summer Fridays mix should come a day early. At first I thought I'd do an all-American one, then I thought about making it......
'Rewind' '80s covers comp at BuffetLibre.net
From Cable and Tweed, Posted July, 3rd 2008
BuffetLibre.net is a Spanish website dedicated to promoting pop and electronic music, and today this week they've released a nice incentive to visit. Their Rewind compilation features contemporary artists covering songs of the '80s with a roster including Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Ruby Isle, Hello Tokyo, The Cloud Room, and others. Perhaps the best part? It's free. The tracklist, courtesy of the site:01 - SOMEONE STILL LOVES YOU BORIS YELTSIN - Another Satellite...
Earlimart: Hymn and Her
From Speed of Dark, Posted July, 3rd 2008
Aaron EspinozaLess than a year after releasing their previous album Mentor Tormentor, Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray of Earlimart are back with another, Hymn and Her, released July 1. The band has not released two albums this close together since their first, Filthy Doorways (1999), and second, Kingdom of Champions (2000), and it was three years between their fourth full-length, the brilliant Treble and Tremble (2004), in which they seemed to nail down their style, and last year's Mentor...

From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted July, 3rd 2008
In celebratory fashion of it's 20th anniversary, Subpop has decided to reinstate their famed singles club for one year. The singles club have included some seriously legendary stuff from people like Nirvana, The White Stripes, Death Cab for Cutie, Sonic Youth, Jesus & Mary Chain, Modest Mouse, and dozens and dozens of others. Singles Club 3.0 is shaping up nicely with a few surprises SP isn't letting out from under their hat just yet.Via Subpop:The Sub Pop Singles Club is...
So tired of being sexy
From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted July, 3rd 2008
Brazilian band Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS) has one of the best band names ever, for two reasons:1) it literally means "I got tired of being sexy" (and who hasn't?)2) the name's taken from something Beyonce once said to that effect. I mean, really.Singing in both Portuguese and English, CSS weaves together shiny, syncopated electro-pop with an edge of irreverent glamour and charming naivete. The Guardian once wrote that ?they sound like an unlikely, brilliantly wrong fusion of Tom Tom...
High Places / Telepathe / Mirror Mirror
From The Daily Growl, Posted July, 3rd 2008
Because I don?t get out to so many gigs these days, it?s over a year now since I;ve been to an Upset! The Rhythm show. That?s a great shame, because their gigs are always ace. But I still check the website to see who they?re putting on, and have a listen to the bands. Most of them I haven?t heard of before and almost all of them are worth checking out.Last month they put on a show by High Places...
Is that a Presets single cover in your pocket...
From DISCONAP, Posted July, 3rd 2008
...or are you just happy to see us?*The Presets have decided to release their best song since "Are You The One?" as a digital EP in the US via iTunes. There's even a K.I.M. remix, which we suppose is kind of meta when you get deep down to it, but it's fairly decent. This may seem controversial, but we're way more into Kimberly than Jules--for one, he has a girl's name (No, he doesn't--Australian Culture Ed.), and kind of looks...
