All We Could Do Was Sing-Port O'Brien
From Oceans Never Listen, Posted July, 2nd 2008
These days Port O'Brien are making quite a name for themselves. They have just arrived with a new album and it is quite good. Actually, very good. It would seem that this band from California, sometimes Alaska, is new on the scene and in someways they are. Well, "All We Could Was Sing" could be seen as a fresh beginning. This is their first studio recorded album and their first to get major distribution. Which is a good thing, because...
Light & Platypi
From Headphones On, Posted July, 2nd 2008
After a fabulous show in Milwaukee on Sunday by the Polyphonic Spree... this song has been stuck on repeat. There are definitely worse things I could have on replay. The Polyphonic Spree - Light And Day (Reach For The......
[The Mighty Narwhale]
From Both Sides of the Mouth, Posted July, 2nd 2008
"Hey! I'm right here! I'm right here!"For anyone that's sent us an email, it might seem like we ignore you, but really it just takes us forever to sort through our email. We really do read it all...sort of. Why today I read an email (sent to us in January) from a brewer (of magic potions, meth, most probably beer) named Ben. It seems a song called Night Lights "smacked [him] right in the receptors." Prepare to get smacked again...
Curiosity Abounds: A Feelies Primer
From Sound Bites, Posted July, 2nd 2008
Reading John Pareles' article in the Times about The Feelies reunion shows this week (which says pretty much everything I would've said, but better and with quotes) I was a bit shocked to learn that their entire catalog is out......
Adron CD release party and in-store in Atlanta, July 30
From Cable and Tweed, Posted July, 2nd 2008
I've praised Brooklyn-based Adron (formerly of Atlanta) more than once in this space, and I'm happy to report that her excellent album will finally be released late this month. Her Tropacalia-laced indie folk is refreshing and unique, and the girl has chops to spare. As I've said before, if this record gets a wide enough audience she could really take off.She will celebrate her debut album's release on New Street Records with a pair of live appearances in...
That M. Ward/Oberst record IS happening, and Jim James is coming too!
From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted July, 2nd 2008
Ya know, that one i told you about way back when, is apparently still happening....only you can also count Jim James (My Morning Jacket) in as well. This is obviously excellent news, I'm pretty huge fans of all three, and we already know how good they sound together from that 2004/2005 Monsters of Folk tour.My only hope is that the record is an equal share between the three, and not focused any one certain way. I mean, I'd prefer...
El Ten Eleven
From Covert Curiosity, Posted July, 2nd 2008
El Ten Eleven is a two-man post-rock-disco from Los Angeles. I heard they were coming to town last week but I didn't have a chance to go check it out, so the best I can do now is jam out to some of their tunes and recommend finding yourself in their tour path. Armed with only guitar, drums and an array of foot pedals, the duo creates instrumental music that has been desrcibed as "Justice meets Tortoise."By listening further, I...
Jay Jay Pistolet
From The Daily Growl, Posted July, 2nd 2008
I thought that my recent post on Mumford and Sons was a fairly minor affair, but it turned out to be one of the most popular for a while. Certainly one of the most commented on. One of these comments came from a shadowy figure called Neil who complimented the post, but then commanded me to write about Jay Jay Pistolet. Well, erm?OK sir. The thing is, I?ve been intending to write about JJP for a while after hearing him...
Aw, look at the cute mouse!
From Yer Mam!, Posted July, 2nd 2008
I apologise, readers. I've been neglecting this blog lately and although I have a bit of a self-imposed "no apologies" policy, I've actually been feeling bad about it, compounded by the occasional wrist-slap from fellow bloggers (Jon The Beef, I'm looking at you). That's all about to change though. I'm turning over a new leaf and I plan to become a more pro-active blogger starting right about now. Or maybe tomorrow. Soon anyway. In the meantime, here's a mix I made....
