From Portland (City of Great Music) Comes News of Even More Greatness
From Oceans Never Listen, Posted July, 1st 2008
One of Portland, Oregon's finest (and there are many) is releasing a new album in September on Sub Pop. Yes, those wild and wacky lads Blitzen Trapper are returning with a new album, following on from 2007's wonderful "Wild Mountain Nation". Only details so far is that the new platter is named "Furr". Thanks to You Ain't No Picasso, you can listen to the title track. Please go there now and listen to four minutes of gorgeous washed out...
How to pronounce the new Sigur Ros record+track names
From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted July, 1st 2008
Over at the venerable Icelandic Orchestral, Eno-rocker's myspace, you can hear frontman Jonsi Birgisson guide you on the proper way to pronounce both the name of their new record, as well as the tracks within it. This is pretty useful you see, because I'm betting you did not, in fact, know how to pronounce Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust....or did you?In other news, the record is fantastic and gets my silver medal for Sigur Ros records, second only...
Shut the club down
From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted July, 1st 2008
Much ado has been made over Greg Gillis' latest release Feed the Animals, released on "the Radiohead price model" (you don't gotta pay any set amount, see). Regardless of your feelings on the merits of sample-based dance music, Girl Talk specifically, the considerably cheesy cover art, or anything else, you've really no excuse not to at least sample the album, being that it's free if you so choose.I'm far from a fan of the genre, but i gotta admit, next...
DJs Take Control
From Headphone Sex, Posted July, 1st 2008
I almost forgot to pimp my forthcoming appearances behind the 1s & 2s. Friday night's session is free... you can't get much better value than that in Shoreditch! Expect music for dancing....

Time Travel Tuesday: More Great Guitar
From Speed of Dark, Posted July, 1st 2008
I've spent the last several Tuesdays on the subject of the cover article of Issue 1054 (June 12) of Rolling Stone, 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time compiled by writers David Fricke, Brian Hiatt, Evan Serpick, and Douglas Wolk. Last week I posted a few of my own favorite guitar songs that did not make this list, and I'll add a couple more today. Over a dozen years ago I recorded a live version of the Smashing...

From Covert Curiosity, Posted July, 1st 2008

That's what you'll get if you win this new contest that Do512 is currently running. One winner will receive a pass allowing them free entry for the entire month of August to each and every show that they desire at Emo's, Antone's, The Parish, Flamingo Cantina,...
Beck has Modern Guilt
From Covert Curiosity, Posted July, 1st 2008
I just had my first listen to Beck's new album, and it sounds like he hit another homerun without even trying. The opening two tracks, "Orphans" and "Gamma Ray" sound as funky as they do simple, "Chemtrails" wanders into Caribou territory, "Modern Guilt" is a pure Beck-ism, and then right as you're getting comfortable he travels off into space for three songs ("Youthless," "Walls," "Replica") before slamming the groove hammer down ("Soul of a Man," "Profanity Prayers") and closing...
This, that, and Thor
From Cable and Tweed, Posted July, 1st 2008
From Catwoman #24 by Ed Brubaker and Guy DavisI'll try to get back to real music coverage shortly, but I've been busy lately. A few notes:Music: The Young Sinclairs and Sound Houses were great at Caledonia Lounge last week, and I've had the current album from North Carolina roots artist Cary Fridley playing constantly. I imagine she'll be the next artist I feature when I can write for fun again.Film: Wanted = overrated. Sorry, Mark...
A kick in the teeth is good for some
From The Daily Growl, Posted July, 1st 2008
Every morning I come into work, fire up my computer and listen to this song. I hear the steady build-up, the ace fuzzy guitar solo and most of all Florence's amazing voice. It's all over in two minutes of pop perfection. Then I'm ready to face the day. I can take on anything. Almost. Download: Florence and the Machine - Kiss With a Fist Buy the 7 inch from Moshi Moshi....
Bodies of Water - A Certain Feeling
From The Daily Growl, Posted July, 1st 2008
Another thing that I picked up at Pure Groove the other week was the new Bodies of Water album. It?s not officially out until 22 July, but they?ve bagged some advance copies for sale (signed too, natch). Since having my pants charmed off by their wonderful debut Ears Will Pop and Eyes Will Blink last year, I was obviously keen to hear what the new stuff sounds like. There?s a definite progression, which although necessary isn?t always a good thing. The...
Noah and the Whale shows Canceled
From Sound Bites, Posted July, 1st 2008
Well this is a bummer. London's blue-clad folkies, Noah and the Whale, were supposed to be playing some NYC shows (Mercury Lounge, Union Hall) while they were coming over for Lollapalooza but have now canceled them, though they are still......
The future is unwritten (I think he might have been our only decent teacher)
From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted July, 1st 2008
?No one struggled more manfully with the gap between the myth and the reality of being a spokesman for your generation than Joe Strummer. Were it not for the Clash, punk would have been just a sneer, a safety pin and a pair of bondage trousers. Instead, the incendiary lyrics of the Clash inspired 1,000 more bands on both sides of the Atlantic to spring up and challenge their elders ? and the man that we all looked...
