Basia Bulat @ The Vanguard

From Oceans Never Listen, Posted June, 13th 2008

Thursday night at The Vanguard was a delightful evening in a delightful setting, in the hands of a delightful performer. Yes, delighted I was, for Basia Bulat is charmed personified. This diminutive singer from London, Ontario was performing in Sydney on her first visit to Australia. I had actually seen Basia perform in Canada last year at the Wolfe Island Music Fest. On that occasion she played with a full band. There were strings and horns everywhere. For this...

More White Williams, yeah

From The Daily Growl, Posted June, 13th 2008

It?s been just over a week since White Williams was on here, but it?s worth doing another post, because in the time since the last one, I?ve acquired a copy of Joe Williams? debut album Smoke, and it?s a total cracker. It?s chock-full of echoey electro-pop goodness with nods to Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Prince, krautrock, that classic 80s synth sound and even a dash of glam rock. And although Lice in the Rainbow should satisfy those who like a...

From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted June, 13th 2008

Normally if you called someone a bedroom knob-tweaker they might punch you (in the neck) but for Georgia-based mixmaster Kellen Crosby aka Black Dominoes it would probably garner you a hug. Mr. Crosby has a knack for pushing the constraints and possibilities in songs, and does mysterious things to them. Last time we heard a Black Dominoes cut it was that Vampire Weekend remix, which eventually went from here in blogland all the way up to the BBC. Cool. Here's the...

Now we're living under the waves.

From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted June, 13th 2008

I realized today that I never told you guys about Pseudosix. My fault, entirely, really sorry about that. About 6 months ago a friend ichat transfered me the song Under The Waves and I was instantly hooked on the Portlander's with the 1994 Alt.Rock sounding name. They're not 1994 alt rock though, their newest and self-titled record sounds something like a hybrid between Pavement's later days, and Wilco's Sky Blue Sky, only with way more attention to detail than either...

From Sound Bites, Posted June, 13th 2008

I don't know if you can make the signature, but the acoustic guitar in the above photo was autographed by Pelle Carlberg. I'm not sure whose guitar it actually was -- more than one person used it at Cake Shop......
