"The Past Is A Grotesque Animal" by Of Montreal which clocks in at 11:53Rome: 1992. We met in the garden. Among daisies and lillies and bumble bees and fountains made of sculptures of adorable fat little child angels and dozens of loud American high school students on holiday; only a small portion of which were themselves fat little children. Even with their ridiculously loud clothing, unconscionably loud mouths, and 'hopefully I won't get mugged' fanny packs, these were our peers....

S/S Friends = Clothes + Music

From Ear Farm, Posted June, 12th 2008

Sam Champion guitarist Sean Sullivan has a busy summer ahead. In addition to the July release of the Brooklyn quartet's sophomore full length Heavenly Bender (North Street Records) and the inevitable slew of live shows to support it, he recently started the clothing line S/S Friends with girlfriend Sarah. Consisting of "seasonally specific" clothing items (namely swim trunks and knit hats), the label pairs each item with a specially curated music release for every run. The initial set features mens...

Aimee Mann: @#%! Smilers

From Speed of Dark, Posted June, 12th 2008

In general, the pop genre is too bland for my taste, but there are a few artists who are so good they transcend the average. Rufus Wainwright is one, and Aimee Mann is another.Last week Aimee Mann released her seventh solo album, @#%! Smilers* since disbanding 'Til Tuesday in 1990. Although Mann has said that Smilers is not a concept album in the manner of 2005's The Forgotten Arm, a common thread definitely runs through the album's tracks....

It was only a matter of time : Fleet Foxes gets remixed

From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted June, 12th 2008

I don't know...I mean on one hand, the tribal thing and the little siren kind of works on an urban meadow type level, but also, it kind of ruins the core appeal of the song in a way. I'm a bit torn at the moment. Of course, I'm not usually one to like remixes either. What do you think?[mp3] Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal (Black Dominoes Remix)...

Swervedriver + Dirty on Purpose | Bowery Ballroom | 6.11.2008

From Sound Bites, Posted June, 12th 2008

. There were not a lot of girls at Bowery Ballroom last night. It shouldn't have been that surprising to me. Swervedriver have always been a Dudes Band. But I hadn't been to such a dude-heavy show in a long......

Duchess of York provide the first addictive smash hit of my summer

From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted June, 12th 2008

Take four kids from Richmond, VA who average an individual age half that of Jack White, and all collectively have lived fewer years than one Mr. James Brown, but who exude heavy doses of both vibes in perfect collaboration. My new favorite on-repeat listen is "21st Century Slave" from their Era In Static EP. No, seriously -- like, listen over and over in my car until it's ridiculous, trying to suppress the urge to dance in the driver's seat, and restrain...

Joey Ryan and the evocative melodies of "Bella"

From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted June, 12th 2008

I recently got a chance to sit down and watch Bella, an independent film from Mexican director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde. I loved so many elements of it -- from the believable way it traces a chance connection between two people over the course of just one day, to the gentle yet realistically untidy way it deals with the mistakes we look back on throughout our lives.Monteverde is a tenacious Austin-based filmmaker, and Bella (his first feature-length film) was the winner...

You?ve either got it or you haven?t

From The Daily Growl, Posted June, 12th 2008

There are any number of young bands out there, featuring choppy new wave guitars, incessant drumming and attractive female vocalists. Most of them are a bit rubbish. Stricken City definitely aren?t. Just don?t ask me why. They?ve just got something the others haven?t.Download: Stricken City ? Tak o TakDownload: Stricken City ? The TravellerOn the other hand, I don?t think So So Modern have it. I?ve given the Kiwi band?s spiky electro guitar pop from their new compilation album a...

BBQ Mark Sultan

From Covert Curiosity, Posted June, 12th 2008

Having a bit too much fun one night getting loosened up for the Clinic show, I was terribly late in getting to the venue which meant I missed out on the opening act Mark "BBQ" Sultan. One of the Canadian-born garage rock veteran's first bands found a way to get blacklisted from the entire Montreal music scene on account of their wild live shows, which can't be an easy feat.Sultan went on to perform and record as a solo artist...
