Computer vs. Banjo

From Speed of Dark, Posted June, 9th 2008

And now for something completely different: the duo of Computer vs. Banjo from Nashville, TN, whose debut CD will be released June 17. Johnny Mann was the lead guitarist of jazz/funk band Gran Torino, and Beau Stapleton played tenor guitar and mandolin for Blue Merle. They trade lead vocals and play a number of instruments, including of course, computer and banjo. Not every song is a gem on this CD, but on some tracks the blues, folk,...

We'd like to take this opportunity to give the Ting Tings' album a solid score of 90% Amazing

From DISCONAP, Posted June, 9th 2008

Like so:Normally we're against spending money on new pop music when we can get perfectly good promotional CDs from record labels, but we saw the whole "Buy our vinyl and we'll give you downloads" deal with the Ting Tings album and we thought what the hell, it's only $11.99 (on sale?!?!?!??!!??!). Anyway we bought it (along with a Cocteau Twins record and one of those Hacienda "OMG Manchester in the early '90s was brilliant" compilations that rears it's head every...

Monday Music Roundup

From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted June, 9th 2008

On Saturday night I decided quite by chance to see a Hebrew/Arabic language foreign film called The Band's Visit, after finding myself downtown with no other plans. This is a humble and unassuming film about the Alexandria (Egyptian) Police Orchestra who end up in the wrong Israeli town on a concert trip. It's quietly and subtly funny, although not a comedy. It touches on the human facets of Arab/Jewish tensions, although not a political film. The themes hover around the...

A Conversation With Cameron

From Oceans Never Listen, Posted June, 9th 2008

Last week I sat down for a conversation with Cameron Potts, from Dead Letter Chorus. We spoke on a range of topics. From the recording of the band's debut album to the song writing process to the joy of playing live. I edited slight parts of the conversation, but this is the vast majority of it. This is my first interview on my blog, so I hope you enjoy.Oceans Never Listen: Recently you sent out a note to your fans...

Yer Mam!'s Guide To Essential Summer Listening Part II: Mixing it up.

From Yer Mam!, Posted June, 9th 2008

Okay, let's get back into it. The sun is really out today, so here are three great summery mixes for you to pump out of your car stereos when the sun is blazing...Friends of the blog and all-round top blokes, Canyons (aka Leo and Ryan from the Hole In The Sky label) are used to sunshine and barbecues, I guess, being Aussies. Lazy geographical stereotyping aside, they've put together a terrifically sunkissed mix exclusively for you guys. Readers of Yer...

Fleet Foxes - "Fleet Foxes" Analysis

From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted June, 9th 2008

Some people are born with a knack for writing songs, and others are born with a knack for writing stories and happen to play guitar. The latter most qualifies Robin Pecknold, the not at all fresh faced, but very young still front-man of Seattle's Fleet Foxes. His songs are nothing you'll read about it in your next Commercial Songwriting textbook; they're often meandering in structure, and even more yet similar in their characters and direction, but where these same traits...

Hard to Find a Friend presents: Headlights w/ The Winston Jazz Routine - 6.16 @ The End

From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted June, 9th 2008

That's right good citizens, we're presenting the Headlights show next Monday at The End. Headlights blew us away in February, and now they're back for more in-between dates of their stint opening for Mates of State. The even better news? We got to suggest some support for this one, and I'm happy to tell you that The Winston Jazz Routine will be opening the evening, so this will certainly be an event you won't want to miss! See the rest...

Back in Black (Affair)

From Sound Bites, Posted June, 9th 2008

Black Affair is Steve Mason's latest musical thing. You may know Mr. Mason's other musical things -- the Beta Band and his solo project, King Biscuit Time which existed during and after the Beta Band's existence. I'm not exactly sure......

Radio Fireworks

From Headphone Sex, Posted June, 9th 2008

I seem to have disappeared again. Sorry about that.

I've spent the day listening to everything I can find from the mysterious 'DISSONANT' label... which isn't that easy as all of their one-sided 12"s are limited to only 1 or 200 copies.

I'm not as blown away as I was hoping after reading some excitable stuff on the web, as not all the releases are as great as they've been sometimes made out...
