The Hold Steady almost killed me
From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted May, 19th 2008
The Hold Steady have their newest album all wrapped up. Stay Positive is due out on July 15th on Vagrant, and the first single "Sequestered in Memphis" is out this Tuesday on iTunes. To help ease the sting of waiting for their follow-up to the absolutely brilliant Boys and Girls In America (2006), I've gone down a few rabbit trails and come up with the following live versions of new Hold Steady songs for you to wrap your ears...
Rebel Side Of Heaven-Langhorne Slim
From Oceans Never Listen, Posted May, 19th 2008
Guaranteed to put a smile on your face. From the new self titled Langhorne Slim album. I love it, full of true heart and beauty and joy. Review of the album coming very soon.Speaking of heart. If this doesn't affect your heart, then perhaps you don't own one. Simply gorgeous. Scott Avett performing "November Blue"....

Mp3s: The Cure in Boston (4 new songs)
From Bradleys Almanac, Posted May, 19th 2008
As promised, here's the full set from last week's Cure show here in Boston. Rather than a long-winded write-up, I'll just run through some personal highlights from the night...The opening "Plainsong" chimes still get me, every time. I spent too much time with that album for it not to. When they started with it, I knew I'd love the show.
Porl is such a brilliant guitarist, and his return is so...
KO'd
From Sound Bites, Posted May, 19th 2008
There are a bazillion reviews of Momofuku Ko out there, certainly more than there should be for a restaurant that only has 12 seats. And Robyn at The Girl Who Ate Everything had pretty much the exact same meal I......
Bridges and Powerlines
From Speed of Dark, Posted May, 19th 2008
Bridges and Powerlines practicing one of my favorite pastimes--poking through the 99-cent rack at the music storeNew York's Bridges and Powerlines specialize in catchy power-pop riddled with 20-something angst. Ghost Types is their second full-length CD, released near the end of last month."Middle Child" was the first song that caught my fancy, but I also like "Half a Cent" and the title tune. From Ghost Types (2008):Half a CentMiddle ChildMySpace | Website | Label: CityBird RecordsBuy at Insound, iTunes, ToneVendor,...
New from Ratatat
From Covert Curiosity, Posted May, 19th 2008
Ratatat is back with a new logo (sweet), two new tracks from a 7'' single, and a new album simply titled LP3 that will drop on July 8th. From the vibes of the two tracks on this single it sounds like it might be a "summer album," but with only the opening-credits-like "Shiller" it is too early to tell. I absolutely cannot wait for these guys to start touring again, their live shows are always a helluva good time. Get...
I'm in love with the world
From Its Hard to Find a Friend, Posted May, 19th 2008
I haven't had much time to post, as you may have noticed, the past few days. My girlfriend had oral surgery and people on painkillers require some attention. On top of this, I've been feeling poorly myself. Tennessee can't quite decide if it prefers winter or summer here lately and my ears, nose, & throat are feeling it.This little gem came on my ipod's shuffle this morning as my alarm clock. It's perfect in every way. It's DCfC coverig Elliott....
Now, Now Every Children
From Both Sides of the Mouth, Posted May, 19th 2008
"And who are these kids sleeping in my bed?"Now, Now Every Children. Sounds like something you would read on the front of a Japanese pencil case. These three very small young people and the fourth seemingly gigantic young person hail from Minnesota, not Japan, and look like sad, angsty, emo teens. That's exactly what their music sounds like too! Just kidding. Kind of.The first thing that came to my mind upon listening to "Not One, But Two" was...
Jeremy Warmsley - new single!
From The Daily Growl, Posted May, 19th 2008
I?ve mentioned this before, but it?s worth saying again. Jeremy Warmsley has a new single coming out soon. It?s a precursor to his forthcoming second album out on Transgressive later this year, but crucially, neither track on the single features on the album. So although that alone is a reason to get it, the main reason is because it?s great. The double A-side features The Boat Song, which was co-written with Emmy the Great who naturally also sings on the...
