Ex Oh Ex Oh

From Sound Bites, Posted May, 13th 2008

I admit it... I watch Gossip Girl. Furthermore, I like it. It started off a too melodramatic but has, over the course of the season, upped the humor to a point where I think it's genuinely enjoyable. Not quite first......

Okkervil River Live On WOXY

From Oceans Never Listen, Posted May, 13th 2008

A little while ago Okkervil River (insert gaudy superlatives here) appeared on WOXY. They played 4 songs including a new one, "Lost Coastlines". It is truly excellent as you would expect with this band. Apparently this song will appear on an appendix to "The Stage Names" that should be out before the year is over. Happy days. New Okkervil River.Okkervil River live on WOXY (including new song!)Some "Lost Coastlines" lyrics to marvel at. Oh, Will Sheff. We sing "is that marionette...

The Cure played Boston (setlist, new songs)

From Bradleys Almanac, Posted May, 13th 2008

I've got many thoughts rolling around in my brain about last night's Cure show here in Boston at BU's Agganis Arena, nearly all good ones, but I'll let them settle in before I write up a proper post to go with the full live recording. Regular 'Nac visitors know that it can take me awhile to edit down and share up sets, and seeing that the now-four-piece band played for nearly 3 hours, this one's...

Album/label/tour news from The Faint

From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted May, 13th 2008

In yesterday's post I mentioned Saddle Creek as being the home of danse-macabre band The Faint, and as I typed that sentence, I wondered what was going on with their punk new-wave selves.Turns out that the news today is that they've actually left Saddle Creek to form their own label called blank.wav, and that they'll have a new record coming out August 5th called Fasciinatiion (with that many "i"s). If you wonder to yourself why this is anticipated news 'round...

Laura Gibson at the Music Box, 04-28-08

From Speed of Dark, Posted May, 13th 2008

We have a large number (for us) of concerts coming up (see the sidebar), and we're already behind on posting about the ones we've seen, so I'm going to attempt a little catching-up today. One of the really nice acts we saw recently was Laura Gibson, who opened for Colin Meloy at the Henry Fonda Music Box Theater on April 28. I found her wispy voice, gentle acoustic plucking, and folky style charming and sweet. Her highly...

Mary O. Harrison CD release Friday, May 16

From Cable and Tweed, Posted May, 13th 2008

Things are temporarily back to normal at C&T HQ. Graduation and Mothers' Day craziness are behind me, and I'll wrap up my grading this afternoon. I'll be in St. Louis this weekend, at which time updates will slow down again. Now, on to musical matters...This Friday night Atlanta's Mary O. Harrison releases her debut album, Factory of Days. Mary O. is a talented pop/folk songtress, and I've long enjoyed her live shows. Her stock in...

Thursday Stubb's Action

From Covert Curiosity, Posted May, 13th 2008

If the action at Emo's on Thursday night doesn't float your boat, head up Red River a few blocks for something completely different. Be Your Own Pet, who were more than a little exciting when I caught them at SXSW, will be part of a bill at Stubb's that also includes Joaquin Phoenix's favorite darkwave band She Wants Revenge, one of Alternative Press's "100 Bands You Need to Know" (The Virgins), and UK powerpop via Switches.Pitchfork gave the newest BYOP...
