Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008)

From Oceans Never Listen, Posted May, 16th 2008

A giant left us this week. I was saddened to hear the news that Robert Rauschenberg passed away at his home in Florida on Monday from heart failure. He was 82. Rauchenberg was famous and quite revolutionary for his work in the field of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Born in Texas, he moved to New York in the 1950s where his fame spread in the art world. He also worked with photography, printmaking and papermaking. He was famous for...

We were going to Photoshop the members of Hot Chip's heads onto some Rolex watches for this post

From DISCONAP, Posted May, 16th 2008

...but quickly realized we couldn't be bothered. Instead, here is a fairly recent press shot featuring the majesty of Joe Goddard's ginger beard:Sigh. The faithful readers of this blog (all five of you) should know by now that we don't like Hot Chip: we fucking adore them. It's of our humble popinion (that was a typo but we are SO keeping it) that they are currently the Best Pop Band in the World, and we could go on and on and...

Superdrag is both filthy and afraid

From I am Fuel, You are Friends, Posted May, 16th 2008

Back in the studio since February, another new song from Knoxville's Superdrag has surfaced over on the Gibson guitars site. Although a release date for the new album has not yet been set, Superdrag is playing a few West Coast dates in the coming weeks, then Bonnaroo this summer and, of course, Monolith.According to frontman John Davis, the new material keeps it tight with the sound Superdrag fans love, described as "an amalgam of Dinosaur Jr.-inspired guitar noise, Hüsker Dü-style...

The Unicorns

From Covert Curiosity, Posted May, 16th 2008

Feeling quite nostalgic lately, I have been doing a lot of listening to this great album from the way-too-short-lived Unicorns. A friend of mine burned this one for me on a long road trip across Texas back in 2003, and at the time I thought it was the weirdest, coolest little album I had ever heard to come out of Canada. After a brief run of relative success, a fanatical following on the indie-rock circuit, sold-out crowds in the U.S....

After All Recovery

From Headphone Sex, Posted May, 15th 2008

Well done to Geoff McQueen, who won t-shirts beyond his wildest dreams in my competition. Hurrah!

I've just been hit by this in my inbox & feel it's worth sharing... a remix of 'Windowlicker' incorporating cut-up dialog from the video. I'm not usually into all that cut-up hip hop stuff, but probably because of the high quality ingredients, this is hot.

Kensington Heights-Constantines

From Oceans Never Listen, Posted May, 15th 2008

Constantines make music to live life by. It is hard, uncompromising, substantial. Yet it is also tender and vulnerable. It is music to shout to, laugh to, cry to, salute to. Above all, it is human and true. "Kensington Heights", their latest and first on Arts and Crafts, continues the Toronto band's tradition of direct and succinct rock. While never breaking the bank of originality, they have made a enormous deposit into the bank of heart and soul. One day I...

Elbow at the Avalon 05.09.08

From Speed of Dark, Posted May, 15th 2008

Grounds for Divorce Drummer Richard Jupp and bassist Pete TurnerViolinistsThe fog obscures some of the frenetic energy that the band brings to their live show, but it could not mask the fact that Elbow, especially Guy Garvey, performed one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Garvey asked the audience repeatedly if we were having a good time - and it was obvious that he truly was concerned. His stage presence and banter were...

Clinic is coming

From Covert Curiosity, Posted May, 15th 2008

The four gents of Liverpool's Clinic are touring the states throughout May, playing shows in a handful of select cities. Neumo's in Seattle, the Bowery in NYC, the Black Cat in D.C., Cat's Cradle in North Carolina, Troubador in L.A., and of course right here in Austin at Emo's. There's a good reason that Clinic is performing at the hot spots in these towns, these guys know how to rock. They play funky, demented, fast-paced psych rock that is complimented...
